Yes it can, and it has been before!
In 1983, a property tax on homes was introduced. In the Local elections of 1985 the public voted against the Government candidates and those who supported the tax. As a result of this the property tax was abolished.
How you vote on the 23rd of May will decide the future of these taxes.
The Councillors you elect will be deciding your home tax.
Every vote for Fianna Fail and the Fine Gael candidates will be claimed as their mandate to increase these taxes and introduce new local taxes.
Do not give them your mandate to do this. For it is not what politicians say that counts, but how they vote.
